Buying a Double Buggy From Birth
When choosing the perfect double buggy, there are many things to consider. We spoke with Fourth Trimester postnatal retreat expert Katie Billingsley for her advice on everything from seating options, age ranges to folding mechanisms and storage space.
This buggy is an essential item for active families. It grows with you and your family, from twins to toddlers. It's light and easy to maneuver and can tackle uneven terrain easily.
What double jogging stroller of buggy would you prefer?
Double buggys are perfect for transporting two children at once even if they're not the same age. They can also be used as prams, and they have recline mechanisms within each seat, allowing your children can sit or lie down in different positions. They're often spacious enough to store everything from snacks and drinks to wipes and nappies. Often they're lightweight, fold up easily and are compact enough to fit in your car boot. If you drive a great deal, it's important to make sure that the buggy be easily maneuvered with the wheels folded in your boot and taken out.
The most well-known type of double buggy is the side-byside that you've likely seen on other moms pushchairs, or perhaps ridden in as a child. They are ideal for older siblings that want to keep up with you or for twins. They typically come with many seating configurations (including "cinema" seats) for your children to pick from. They are generally easy to control, and if select a model that has a soft suspension, they can easily handle kerbs.
Tandem buggies, which are easier to turn than side-by sides, are also popular. The second seat is positioned behind the first and not on top. They're usually bigger than a side-byside and can be heavy when folded, so it's important to check they'll be able to pass through doors and public transport. They can be used to transport twins, a baby and toddler or three children with the addition of a buggy.
Lastly there are the'single-to-double' convertibles which can be used as a single pushchair from birth then convert to a double by attaching a second seat, carrycot or car seat to their clever frame. They are generally more expensive than side by sides or tandem buggies but provide plenty of flexibility and a high resale value. They're generally easy to steer, have an enormous storage basket and can cope well on uneven surfaces. Some even have built-in ride-on boards and 'cinema seating' for your child's older.
Do you have twins?

Double buggys are the ideal method to transport your children, no matter if they are twins or older siblings. There are two types of double buggies: tandem buggies which have one child sitting over the other, and side-byside buggies. Both can be fitted with two fixed seats, however side-by-side buggies tend to be narrower in size to fit through doors. Tandems tend to be larger overall. They can also accommodate a carrycot as well as a toddler seat.
Do you have children?
A younger sibling can be a big responsibility initially, particularly when you must tend to the infant. They might be feeling a little secluded if they are placed in an infant carrier while you push the older sibling ahead and having a double buggy from birth will make life simpler. It will also provide your child with a sense of pride as they are able to be 'big brother or sister' and help them get used to their new role.
Side-by-side buggies can be a good option for twins, as both children will have the same view. However, they are bulky and heavy. The Leclerc B-AGILE DUAL is a streamlined double buggy with a unique frame which expands widthways and can accommodate two fixed seats. It also provides a variety of configuration options including using the second seat to create a bassinet.
If you prefer, we suggest the Mountain Buggy Double Trailblazer for active families who like to explore. This innovative buggy is a single pushchair which can be made a double by adding a second seat or carrycot (depending on the model). Its smooth ride is perfect for rough terrain, and it features many thoughtful features that are sure to ensure that everyone is happy.
Do you need a travel system?
Double buggies are excellent for transporting your children around in comfort however they're not the ideal purchase for every family. Depending on your lifestyle, and the age gap between your kids you might be able to make do with a single stroller and certain attachments such as baby carriers and toddler harnesses that allow you to ferry your child around on their back or in front of you.
There are three types of double buggies: tandem side-by-side and convertible. The two seats are set parallel to each other, so your children will be able to see one another. However, these tend to be wider than a single pushchair, and can be difficult to maneuver up and down kerbs. Tandem buggies are small with a seat at the front and a second one at the back. However they can be heavy and long to push.
Convertible double buggies permit you to convert one stroller into a double buggy by attaching a bassinet or infant car seat to the frame. You can leave your child in the car seat until he or is able to climb up into the buggy seat. The Uppababy V2 is an excellent example - it can be used with twins as well as a toddler and a baby or even three children using the optional PiggyBack Board.
If your children have grown older and have more endurance, a double buggy can also be used to accompany them on bike rides or day excursions where they prefer to walk. It is important to keep in mind that your kids may not always like to be in a stroller and could become tired and disgruntled on longer outings.
Before you decide to purchase a double stroller, consider the above factors and your family's unique circumstances. Having a sturdy and reliable double stroller will simplify your life especially if you need to travel through busy streets or crowded shopping centres.
